We were worried about leaving and a security guard stayed w/ us until a ride picked us up. We tried to ignore it but could have easily escalated - he was clearly on some drugs. Unbelievable that the club took not more serious action and has no safety measures. Several guests came up to us after the show apologizing for what they witnessed□ and stating “they felt bad for us”. He was NOT removed by security until end of show. (Hopefully not being paid off) - we felt unsafe during the performance and his company kept apologizing for his poor behavior. Security tried to remove him but let him back in. He was obnoxious and aggressive, in my husband’s face all night, pushing him/ attacking him, being in his space - staff did very little - also everyone noticed including the comedian. Sadly, that company was placed at our table. We got lucky to get in “stand-by” and witnessed a guy “paying” his way in by “bribing”- after being told it’s full. The basement is cramped, people on each others laps. Each week consists of three to six shows a night on Sunday through Thursday and ten shows each Friday and Saturday, between both the original room and the larger Village Underground around the corner. A show will consist of between five and seven comics performing sets of roughly 10-15 minutes each. The Comedy Cellar, like The Comedy Store, uses a showcase format, as opposed to a headline format like most clubs. The businesses share the same menu, kitchen, and staff. The club is owned by Noam Dworman, who inherited it from his late father, Manny, and run by booker Estee Adoram, who has developed the club's talent for nearly four decades. Above the club is a restaurant called The Olive Tree Cafe to which it is connected, where many of the comedians hang out after performing. It is located in Greenwich Village on 117 Macdougal Street between West 3rd Street and Minetta Lane. It was founded in 1982 by then stand-up comedian, and current television writer/producer Bill Grundfest. It is widely considered to be the best comedy club in the country. The Comedy Cellar is a comedy club in Manhattan where many top New York comedians perform.
